Gayle Smillie, 34, was walking four miniature dachshunds in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, when a man and woman tried to grab one of them.
Despite being lashed repeatedly with a strap, Gayle managed to escape with 10-year-old Tilly and the other dogs.
The attack happened on Thursday at Perchy Pond.
Gayle, who walks dogs for a living, said: "I live right next to Perchy and I'm up there every day.
