Ash hell for cut-off Tonga after Pacific volcano blast

THE volcanic eruption off Tonga that triggered tsunamis has smothered the South Pacific islands in ash, cut power and severed communications.

Satellite images suggest some of the outlying islands have been totally submerged by the sea.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said tsunami waves had caused “significant damage”, washing boats ashore and battering beachside homes.
