A RARE D-Day parachute dummy that was mistaken for a scarecrow has been donated to a museum.
It was discovered by Robert Bowley, 80, as he cleared out the home of his late brother Michael, a keen collector.
He thought it was a scarecrow and took it to a museum only to be told it was a D-Day "paradummy" worth more than &pound;10,000.
Made of hessian cloth, straw and sawdust, it was one of several hundred used in Operation Bodyguard on June 6, 1944.
Paradummies were used to suggest fake invasions by allied forces and divert enemy attention from the Normandy landing beaches. Among them were a small number of SAS men, equipped with recordings of the sounds of battle to create further confusion.
Most dummies had a self-destruct mechanism making this surviving one rare.
There are thought to be fewer than 30 around.
Robert, of Braintree, Essex, said: "My brother used to go to France a lot in the 50s and 60s and brought all sorts back. I found it in his house. It looked like a scarecrow, or a rag doll."
The dummy is now on display at House on the Hill Toy Museum, Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex.
