The frontbencher, who ended up with a beefed-up role after a botched sacking by Sir Keir Starmer last week, said the leader “cheeses her off”.

She added that Labour will not be back in power for a “very long time” unless the party ends its civil war.

“There is a small group that get the headlines that are just in a power struggle,” she said. “And that’s nonsense – because we’re not in power in Westminster.
