French Prime Minister Jean Castex has written to Boris Johnson with proposals to fight people smugglers.
It is understood they could include ways to open legal routes to the UK for asylum seekers and to allow unaccompanied minors to join relatives in Britain.
Downing Street insisted Mr Johnson wants to make “urgent progress” on the issue.
