MOTORCYCLE travel is like that pesky bug that you can never squish into extinction. It has this uncanny habit of returning periodically to bite that itches until the buttocks sink into the saddle of a motorcycle cruising on a tongue of black tarmac. With the Covid-19 pandemic spreading its menace far and wide, putting severe restrictions on free-spirited travel, the motorcycling bug raged for the better part of the past year like bubbling hormones of a teenager. It strained at the leash. The thing with motorcycle travelling, or moto touring as some like to call, is that you need to slake the urge regularly like an addict’s need for crack. The cold exhaust of a motorcycle is guaranteed to give a habitual tourer cold turkey.
The growl, the grunt, the thump of the engine, the warmth of pumping metal between the legs, the rushing roar of the wind that you hear through the helmet, and the symphony of the exhaust are soul food for anyone who has remained in love with this form of travel that many fail to comprehend. After all, for the satisfaction of the soul and, that tingling sensation of unfettered freedom, you are often left with a sore bum and aching wrists, especially after those long rides. But for incorrigible moto travellers, these are mere occupational hazards; a small price to pay; they are aches and pain of love.
So, when the chance came to ride a brand-new Royal Enfield Meteor and spend the weekend at the ultra-luxurious Fairmont Jaipur, it was the best get-outof-Covid-jail card in a long, long time. All scheduled work and chores for the weekend were promptly put in the lockdown mode within minutes of the decision. I have always maintained that travelling to Jaipur by road is a better option than any other mode of transport. And, if the mode of transport happens to be a motorcycle, it’s even better.
