VITALY UGOLNIKOV 23-Year-Old Russian Bodybuilding Sensation
Muscular Development|February 2021
It is a great pleasure to feature 23-year-old Russian bodybuilding sensation Vitaly Ugolnikov in Muscular Development. MD readers will discover a new young champion who might be one of the most promising pros in the circuit in the near future.
VINCENT PRADO

VP: We heard that your season 2020 was incredible!

VU: Indeed, 2020 was a very unique year for me, and yes, during this last year I succeeded to become the Absolute Champion of Russia (in October 2020), and I am particularly proud of this title. I accomplished a colossal progression, particularly if you consider that I am still very young (I was born in August 1997). Also I am so glad that I never had any trauma since I started training, yet! I started competing two and a half years ago, and this period was a time of incredible discipline and dedication.

VP: What were your muscle gains in one year?

VU: Over the past year, I gained 10 kilograms of pure muscle mass, which means that in 2019 my weight on stage was 96 kg, and in 2020, it was 106 kg. I am very satisfied of my progress.

VP: What was your prep strategy? What did you plan for this year of progression?

VU: My strategy to pack on muscle mass was twofold. Firstly, I took a very high input of calories from good and healthy products, and secondly I changed my training by concentrating on heavy weights. Using very heavy weights and still doing eight to 12 reps per exercise really made my muscles a lot bigger. So I stay with it.

MECCA OF RUSSIAN BODYBUILDING

VP: Tell us more about yourself, Vitaly.

VU: I am from the very far away Sakhalin island.

Remember, Russia is huge and it stretches to the Pacific Ocean. Sakhalin is a very big Island in the Pacific Ocean, just north of Japan. It has a very harsh climate. But good gyms are not many there; it is quite provincial. However, I started training at home in Sakhalin at the age of 16. At this moment I am 23 and I am already seen as the most promising bodybuilding athlete of Russia! I made my first real progresses in Sakhalin, and then I moved to Saint Petersburg to better grow and improve. I live now in Saint Petersburg, which is considered the Mecca of Russian bodybuilding.

VP: What are your measurements?

VU: I am 175 cm, and so far, my weight on stage has been 106 kg, while my off-season weight is about 125-130 kg. I am not a guy who would often measure the size of my muscle groups! I just know that my thighs are 80 cm, and my arms are about 53 cm.

VP: When did you start lifting and training?

VU: As I said I started going to gyms at 16, but I seriously started to train when I was 20, when I was spotted by the most powerful company in Russia, SportLife. They took me out of Sakhalin and proposed me to continue my journey in Saint Petersburg, where they offered me all the possibilities to become a champion.

VP: What brought you to bodybuilding and not to another kind of sport?

WHO IS THE KING OF ALL FREAKS- RONNIE OR RAMY?

When Big Ramy was crowned Mr. Olympia last December, it was the first time a man over 250 pounds had held that title in over a decade. At 290 pounds, we hadn’t seen such a mass monster rule the sport since the days of Ronnie and Jay. Ronnie Coleman remains the heaviest man to ever win the Mr. Olympia at a bodyweight of 296 in 2004. Comparisons between the two colossal men, Ramy and Ronnie, soon sprung up everywhere online and in social media. Who is the king of all freaks? To answer that, we sought out the best-qualified men to answer that question: Giles Thomas, Ronnie Coleman himself, and the only man to coach both champions to Mr. Olympia wins, Chad Nicholls.

To the undiscerning eye, the Turkish city of Demre is not much to look at, let alone stop for. Rows upon rows of greenhouses covered in clear plastic sheeting cover nearly every plot of land.
