Single-Shot Hunter
Gun World|Gunslinger Fall 2016

Uberti has updated the old winchester 1885 high wall design into a modern carbine with old west flair.

It’s the best of both worlds. It’s like having your cake and eating it, too. When you can describe a product in these terms, it’s usually a very good thing.

I like the history, the tradition of Old West-style firearms. I like the way they handle in use. At the same time, I have a great appreciation for advances in firearms technology. Today the metal is better and the manufacturing techniques are more precise. There are more options when it comes to mounting scopes and other accessories. Bullet design has improved, too.

Uberti has been making replicas of Old West firearms since 1959. Among their current offerings are versions of the Model 1885 High Wall falling block, single-shot rifle with barrel lengths of 28, 30 and 32 inches in calibers of .45-70, .45-90 and .45-120.

New this year from Uberti is the High Wall Big Game rifle, a Model 1885 in .4570 especially designed for hunters. It features the same strong action that made these rifles famous, but with a shorter 22-inch barrel and a scope rail on the receiver. It is a perfect blend of the old and new, the best of both worlds.

ONE IS ENOUGH

“One shot, one kill” shouldn’t be the objective of military snipers alone. Every hunter should strive to take game animals quickly and humanely. If your shots are within the capabilities of your firearm, cartridge and shooting skills, in most cases one shot will be all you need.

Single-shot rifles have a lot to offer the hunter. They tend to be of simple, foolproof designs that are rugged and reliable. In many cases they are very accurate.

MGM Targets: Banging Steel

Paper targets are great, but that can get boring after a while, even for the most dedicated shooter. Nothing is as fun as hitting steel targets, and few things are more satisfying as squeezing the trigger, the gun firing, then … wait for it …. wait for it … that sound of lead hitting steel. That’s music to the ears—like the sound of the Liberty Bell.
