A year since the #MeToo wave hit India, we celebrate feminism’s most powerful weapon – the hashtag.
This time last year, the #MeToo movement was already on in full swing: Hollywood actor Alyssa Milano created the hashtag that launched a thousand truths. Closer home, former Miss India Tanushree Dutta became the unlikely face of the movement when she spoke out against actor Nana Patekar in September of last year, repeating charges she first made against him a decade ago. And while women are still underrepresented in the media generally, social media encourages a more level playing field, allowing for the voices of women from a wider array of backgrounds and countries, with or without traditional power, to be heard. In fact, there are a bunch of people responsible for what our world looks like. You’re able to read this sentence now because someone decided that you deserve to exist. Today, we have the work of feminist activists, trans models and even non-binary performance artists that inspire us. These, and so many more, are the voices that have risen through the Internet.
