Tropical architecture typically conjures up images of lush green landscapes, earthy materials and hues, deep overhangs, verandas, courtyards, and shaded spaces – a shelter from the heat, the humidity, and the rains. The traditions of the tropical style have of course evolved to reflect contemporary attitudes towards architecture and design, but the underlying concept, which strongly dictates the elements, has always been to make the building breathe. The net result of an admirable architecture in the tropics is its ability to aid in a flow of fresh air circulating throughout the interiors.

The Urban Alchemy 9, designed by Ankit Prabhudessai, creates a perfect tropical paradise for its residents in Goa. “We envisaged creating architecture that breathes and one that embodies the same characteristics as that of a tree in nature through this group housing project,” explains the architect. With centuries behind it as a melting pot of cultures, the location allowed the architect to tap into the genesis of vernacular styles with a backdrop of innovative materials that Goa is known for.
