A clay-based field can feel like concrete in the summer, but come the autumnal and winter rains can be transformed into a mini Somme environment! Even fields that are still covered in decaying stubble can result in the development of what I call ‘Moon Boots’.
These moist or saturated clay-based soils can result in the detectorist carrying around many extra pounds in weight attached to their wellies.
