It takes more than a volcanic eruption to beat a colony of Alaskan crested auklets.
Events don’t come much more life-changing than a volcanic eruption that wipes out your entire breeding habitat. But what Mother Nature takes away, she also provides, as witnessed by the remarkable recovery of a population of Alaskan seabirds following a cataclysmic blow.
Kasatochi Island in the Aleutian archipelago is home to a huge seabird colony consisting of 100,000 crested auklets and 150,000 least auklets, both of which nest in nooks and crannies among the rubble of scree slopes in a cove on the north of the island.
