Jordan An Arabian Jewel
Professional Mountaineer|Winter 2016

The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) has been working in partnership with Jordan Tourist Board for several seasons to help develop mountaineering leadership skills, following a visit by the Director of Eco and Adventure Tourism to the BMC offices in January 2014. He was impressed by what he saw, and so began a productive partnership.

The initial aim of this project is to train suitably experienced individuals from Bedouin communities in leadership skills for trekking, climbing and canyoning, bringing in a team of instructors from the UIAA training community, with representation from the UK, France, Spain, Turkey and Russia. Because of the environmental challenges and also the difficulties of ‘teaching climbing as a foreign language’ all the staff needed to hold either their country’s national qualification or be members of IFMGA – as well as being known personally by myself as course director. Finding volunteers of this calibre is difficult, and I am indebted to Plasy Brenin and the AMI for their assistance.
