You vs Partner & In-Laws
Bona|December 2019
When in a relationship, you expect your partner to stand up for you when someone criticises and makes you feel bad. But, that can be tricky within families since the dynamics are unique. Now, what happens when your partner always sides with their family?

You vs Partner & In-Laws

There’s a saying that goes: when you marry someone, you also marry their family. This is particularly true for two women based in Johannesburg; 32-year- old Lebohang* and 31-year-old Tumi*. Although Lebohang is not married, she has been in a relationship for almost nine years and hasn’t had a great experience with her partner’s family. “At first, I thought his family would ease up on the negative remarks and teasing about my upbringing when I explained that certain things were done differently in my culture. I had hoped that disclosing the fact that I lost my mother at a young age would serve as reason enough for them to understand my way of thinking. But, it didn’t; instead, my partner echoed their sentiments and never defended me, even though he knew the whole story.”
