Five Class Actions Filed Against Drug Companies: US.
In the US, five class actions were filed by consumers who had to pay costly insurance premiums as a result of the current opioid epidemic.
Drug companies were charged with bad marketing practices, negligence, and other legal violations. Each of the class actions stated that the defendant, i.e., opioid companies, distributors, and marketers, led the consumers to spend more money on their insurance than they otherwise would have.
The suits were brought on behalf of people and businesses who paid for health insurance in 5 US states, including California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, since 1996. These suits represent a new front in litigation seeking to hold corporations accountable for the opioid crisis.
Around 600 civil lawsuits were filed by municipalities trying to get compensation for extra expenses incurred due to opioid makers and distributors.
