Time Travel Became Reality at the Shannons Sellicks Beach Historic Races …

Sellicks Beach - Historic Races

Time travel has long been the dream of many authors and filmmakers. And why not? What would be more interesting than travelling back in time to see how things really were back when? Well, thanks to the Levis Motorcycle Club the closest thing to time travel became a reality on February 18 and 19, with the running of the Shannons Sellicks Beach Historic Races. And a great event it was!

With over 110 pre-1963 motorcycles in the field, and thousands of spectators, this was one heck of a big event, with racers travelling from all states and territories of Australia. And what a beautiful cacophony was produced when the noise of the old bikes being ridden hard and fast as they roared up and down the beach, mixed with the roar of the crowd. And then there was the smell of the various fuels being burnt. These two things combined caused all of one’s senses to become totally immersed.

The Levis Motorcycle Club has been a part of the fabric of motorcycling in South Australia since 1922, and is the oldest club in the state. It takes its name from the Levis Motorcycle, which was built in the UK between 1911-1940.

Driven by the wishes of its membership, the club began organising speed meetings early on, with the main annual fixture of the Club being the Sellicks Beach Speed Trials, which soon became a regular summer highlight.
