Uber driver DaVante Williams swallowed hard when he spotted his gas gauge heading toward empty. A raging snowstorm had left I-95 traffic at an hourslong standstill. He had to get off the road. But his 15-year-old passenger was still more than 100 miles from home, and he wasn’t about to leave her stranded

DaVante Williams hadn’t driven for Uber in a year, but he’d just bought a new pickup with allwheel drive—and a payment book. So when a major snowstorm hit Washington, D.C., he headed out.

After a few airport runs, DaVante got called to the train station, where he picked up 15-year-old Antonia Ward. She’d spent the Christmas break visiting her dad and stepmom in New York and was headed home to Williamsburg, Virginia, but a derailment had left her stranded in D.C. So her stepmom ordered her an Uber.

The idea of driving 2'% hours in a snowstorm had given DaVante pause. But the fare was too good to turn down.

“Let’s go,” he said, and the all-wheel drive handled the interstate nicely. But 20 miles out, the traffic stopped.
