What was her husband up to? Lydia had to find out
When I married James, I told myself that I was never going to doubt him. My lack of trust had soured my first marriage to Mark, and I didn’t want to ruin everything again. But alarm bells rang when he started coming home later every night, and I couldn’t help but imagine the worst.
‘I think he’s having an affair,’ I told my best friend Cathy when she came round for a coffee after we'd collected the children from school one day.
‘Of course he isn't,’ Cathy replied immediately. ‘He adores you, Lydia, and he isn’t the sort to have an affair.’
‘What do you mean?’ I asked.
‘Well, he’s too... geeky,’ Cathy said as we sat down in my conservatory, so we could keep an eye on the children playing outside.
‘You mean nobody else would fancy him.’
‘No, I didn’t say that,’ Cathy replied, although it was obvious that was what she’d meant. ‘But he just isn’t the sort of man who would cheat, so there must be something else going on. Why don’t you ask him why he keeps being late?’
‘I'm too scared,’ I admitted. ‘When I used to ask Mark the same question, he would lose his rag and tell me it was none of my business.’
