Sri Lanka feels like a secret that has been kept for far too long. After my trip to this gorgeous island, I want to shout about it from the rooftops. Magnificent ancient ruins, beautiful beaches, lush greenery and luxurious, affordable stays means that this destination has it all.

Colombo calling

Travelling with my husband Alex, our kids (aged 14 and 12) and my mum, our adventure began in Colombo, the capital city. It's a bustling, modern town with tuk-tuks whistling down the bumpy roads at an eye-watering rate, and streets lit up with vibrant fruit stalls that are so colourful you can almost taste their wares.

Be prepared to see plenty of animals running loose, and I'm not just talking about the stray dogs (they are much loved and locals look after them). Elephants and monkeys are also everywhere and are one of the magical, unforgettable features of this country.
