Lion-hearted RUTH
Woman's Weekly

Her pal's idea was a game changer, but did she have the courage to walk through the gate and into a new life?
Standing trembling at the gate, Ruth didn’t dare open it. It was a barrier that stopped her returning to a normal life. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she turned and strode back to her car.
It was only last week that Ruth's friend Carol had suggested she join her in a women’s walking football kickabout at the local club.
‘Walking football? What on earth is that?’ asked Ruth.
‘I’ve seen the Lionesses on TV playing at Wembley, but they certainly don’t walk. I played football at school, but that was ages ago. It’s not for me.’
Carol helped herself to her third chocolate biscuit as she spread herself out on the sofa. ‘Oh, don’t be such a wimp!’ she said. ‘It’s time you got out more and made new friends. I know Joe is no longer by your side, but you can’t go on grieving forever. That sounds harsh, Ruthie, but it needs saying.’
Another biscuit disappeared.
‘But I haven't exercised in years, and I get out of breath walking upstairs,’ said Ruth. ‘As for wearing a football kit, it takes me all my time to squeeze into my clothes. How would I look in shorts and a football shirt when I've now got bulges on my bulges?’
Carol sighed as she finished off the last biscuit.
‘Ruthie, you will be fine,’ Carol replied. ‘You've played football before, and you can play it again, only this time you don’t have to run, just walk.’
Ruth sighed. ‘It’s all right for you, with all your friends and family. I've got no one to open up to.’
Carol was trying hard to hide her impatience. ‘Look, Ruthie. I am here for you. I always have been. You used to be the life and soul of the party, and I understand Joe’s passing has been devastating for you, but it's time to move on.’
Ruth began to shake and started to get angry. ‘Carol, stop feeling sorry for me. I’m going to get over this.’
Carol was surprised yet, at the same time, pleased with Ruth's reaction.
