Colder temperatures and more time spent indoors means a spike in colds, flu and Covid-19. Here's how to hit back
Does the wintertime sometimes feel like an ongoing battle to dodge or fend off the latest infections doing the rounds? Don't despair this year because if the winter germs come your way, we have a fightback plan to help you recover and start feeling better quickly – and avoid other bugs heading your way.
Rest and recovery
Stay at home if you're feeling poorly. Not only does this help protect others from infection, it gives your body a chance to recover. Keep warm to support your body's natural healing process, and lower your temperature with paracetamol or ibuprofen if you need to. And make sure you get plenty of rest. It's important to get enough restorative sleep each night too. says immunologist Dr Jenna Macciochi*. Aim for around eight hours per night, with a regular bedtime and wake time.
Keep hydratedDrinking plenty of fluids will prevent dehydration, help regulate your temperature, deliver nutrients around your body and flush the bug through your system. So make sure you have plenty of water.
'Proper hydration is vital for overall health,' explains Dr Macciochi. And it's especially important when you are fighting illness. 'It helps keep your airways properly lubricated with the right amount and consistency of mucus to prevent infection.'
