Laid-back southern Majorca offers the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration

- CAROLINE HELDER

Balearic BLISS

With its beautiful beaches, rugged hillsides and buzzing hubs, Majorca is a pinup escape for a springtime sunshine holiday. But with 3,600sq km of terrain to explore, the largest of the Balearic islands can't be seen all in one trip. So if it's your first time, you could make for the diverse south coast and the area around Es Trenc, which is about a 40-minute drive from Palma airport. With remarkable sands, coastal living and sleek places to stay, it's the ultimate introduction to this enchanting island.

Beaches and beyond

Beautiful white sands and crystal clear waters - Es Trenc looks quite tropical, so no wonder it's one of the most famous beaches in Majorca. Part of a natural area of special interest, and with shallow depths for gentle swims, it's one of the essential places to visit when you come to the south of this Balearic isle. However, the real Majorcan magic happens when you venture on to the water. Corb Marí Sea Experience is run by local skipper Marco and offers trips on his authentic llaüt, a traditional Balearic fishing boat. He will show you all the beaches, coves and islands of the south coast, and also carries paddleboards and snorkelling equipment should you really want to immerse yourself.
