How to be a BOUNDARY BOSS

Burnout stems from a lack of power and control. But high-performance coach and podcaster James Laughlin shares how to set guidelines and achieve goals like a CEO
-
Here's my challenge to you: become a boundary boss. Self-discipline is an essential component of a life well lived and nonnegotiable for people who want to unleash their true potential.
Steve Jobs was one of the world's high performers. He changed the face of the technology world and his relentless commitment to excellence was matched only by his disciplined approach to the things that mattered most. I once chatted to his executive assistant, Naz Beheshti, who spoke of how strict Steve was with his calendar. He would be very firm about meeting times, would often host those meetings while walking, and would prioritise yoga, meditation and wholefood meals.
There's often a pattern like this with the global gamechangers, where they set very strict guidelines. Every prime minister I've ever worked with has had a gatekeeper, a person who stands firm to ensure that only the people who align with their mission are allowed into the calendar.
When I did my first-ever interview with a head of state, his secretary said I had 25 minutes. I simply couldn't understand how an effective conversation could happen in such a short time. But it forced me to focus only on the important points and I got way more wisdom than I'd bargained for - because he was in the habit of doing the same. Effective personal boundaries balance protection and connection, functioning like a selectively permeable stone wall whose gate allows us control over our emotional and mental space. Boundaries require clear, reasonable limits that respect our personal needs and those of others, focusing on authenticity and reality rather than emotional reactions. The necessary starting point is giving yourself permission to set limits, understanding your personal thresholds, being mindful about sharing information and clearly communicating your needs.Dit verhaal komt uit de Novemeber 24, 2025-editie van New Zealand Woman's Weekly.
