THE WHY &THE WHICH

Three style takeaways: Never underestimate the power of a blazer. Leopard print is a wardrobe essential. Local markets = one-of-a-kind pieces.
» Are there winter trends that you're looking forward to wearing? I prefer to interpret trends through classic looks. This season I'm leaning towards natural wintry fabrics, tailored coats and fine layering. I love a good poloneck in a soft knit, cable-knit jumpers and a well-cut faux-fur jacket. I always say, invest in pieces that outlive the trend cycle and you'll never feel out of step.
» Any styling tips you've picked up working for a big fashion brand? One golden rule I've learnt is to know your proportions. It's not just about what's 'in'; it's about what works for your shape, skin tone and lifestyle. And never underestimate the power of a blazer; it's a wardrobe hero.
» Is there is a trick to styling neutrals in an interesting way? I play with contrast through fabrics: a silky blouse with a wool coat, suede boots with a crisp cotton shirt. Or I'll introduce some colour, like burgundy or a rich emerald.
» What is an underrated fashion item? Quality leather accessories like a well-crafted belt or a minimalist bag often get overlooked in favour of flashier statement pieces with buckles and chains. High-quality leather not only lasts for years but also adds that quiet, understated confidence to your outfit.
» What are the three most-worn items in your wardrobe? My studded black ballerina pumps from Woolies; my matching athleisure sets for work-from-home days; and my cream oversized blazer (page 12), which somehow makes even a basic tee and jeans look elevated.
» Where would you shop for a dress for an event, a workwear outfit and leather boots? I'd go with an Orapeleng Modutle dress for a formal event – his gowns are simply elegant – and Uyinqaba Designs if it’s a traditional event. A workwear outfit: Woolworths, hands down. And for a pair of leather boots, definitely Country Road.

The BOOK THIEF
Our daughter, Twenty-Five, is standing in front of me, bristling with indignation. Unusually, this time it's not me who has given her the giant pip; it's her brother, Twenty-Six. Apparently he lent two of her favourite books to someone, and when she wanted them back, he couldn't remember who.

Misti Haircare x Actives
After building brands for others for more than 20 years, often as a single parent and sole provider, Misti Watson reached a point of depletion. The pressure to deliver for clients while raising two daughters felt unsustainable, so she finally turned towards an idea she had carried quietly for years. In 2024, she took the leap to create a brand of her own, and 14 months of determined work later, she launched Misti Haircare x Actives.
