When to save, where to splurge and how to travel sweetly in Tuscany, one of the world's most enchanting regions
THE BASICS
Smart planning makes all the difference. Factor in these realities when mapping out your itinerary:
Tuscany attracts tourists throughout the year, but November to February (excluding Christmas and the New Year to Epiphany period) is generally slower, with better rates for accommodation and some attractions.
Entry to state-run museums and cultural attractions is free on the first Sunday of the month from October to March, on Liberation Day (25 April), on Republic Day (2 June), on European Heritage Days (mid-September), during Culture Week (April/May or September/October), and for women on International Women's Day (8 March). Arrive early, as the lines can be long.
If your itinerary involves several museum visits, save time and money with a multi-venue ticket such as OpaSi Pass in Siena, FirenzeCard in Florence and pArcheo Card for the natural attractions.
Emulate the locals and enjoy a morning coffee and pastry standing at the counter rather than sitting at a table, which comes with a service charge. Look for fixed-price or tasting menus for good lunch and dinner deals.
GIFTS FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS
'Italian supermarkets are a revelation and a great source of gifts,' says actress and playwright Chiara Montalto-Giannini. 'You can buy a Moka (stove-top coffee pot) for half of what it costs in a touristy area, and the tablecloths sold in supermarkets are also superior.'
Another recommendation: Italian pharmacies. 'They're not just about medicine and illness, but also about benessere (wellbeing), which is a totally different vibe. You'll find the best health and beauty products, creams, sunscreens and makeup.'

The BOOK THIEF
Our daughter, Twenty-Five, is standing in front of me, bristling with indignation. Unusually, this time it's not me who has given her the giant pip; it's her brother, Twenty-Six. Apparently he lent two of her favourite books to someone, and when she wanted them back, he couldn't remember who.

Misti Haircare x Actives
After building brands for others for more than 20 years, often as a single parent and sole provider, Misti Watson reached a point of depletion. The pressure to deliver for clients while raising two daughters felt unsustainable, so she finally turned towards an idea she had carried quietly for years. In 2024, she took the leap to create a brand of her own, and 14 months of determined work later, she launched Misti Haircare x Actives.
