There's a saying that captures the essence of one of South Asia's finest luxury heritage hotels: “While in India, one must visit the Taj Mahal and stay at The Imperial.” I would add another, equally transcendent must-do to any savvy traveller's wish list - a visit to The Imperial Spa.
I'm staying (at my own expense) with my husband for five nights at The Imperial as part of our 10th wedding anniversary celebrations. The iconic Taj Mahal is the next destination on our month-long tour of northern India and Rajasthan. But first, I have a treat in store for both of us.
We're booked in for the signature Imperial Iconic Massage, a 90-minute immersion into sublime and holistic wellness that ultimately becomes one of the highlights of our stay. I'm getting ahead of myself, though, because the spa's setting in India's grande dame of luxe hotels is as special as the spa itself.
