UBER'S ROBOTAXI BET AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN FOR DRIVERS
Techlife News
|April 18, 2026
Uber’s decision to commit more than $10 billion to robotaxis marks one of the clearest signs yet that the company no longer sees autonomous vehicles as a side experiment.
-
The plan includes more than $7.5 billion to acquire robotaxi fleets and about $2.5 billion in equity stakes in autonomous vehicle developers, with services targeted for at least 28 cities by 2028 if deployment milestones are met.
That is a major break from Uber’s longstanding asset-light model. For years, Uber built its business by relying on independent drivers who supplied the cars, absorbed the operating costs, and gave the platform flexibility. Now the company is putting serious capital behind a future in which a growing share of rides may be handled by autonomous vehicles instead. Reuters reported that the shift is meant to help Uber avoid being disrupted by robotaxis rather than displaced by them.
For Uber drivers across America, the question is not whether this changes the business. It does. The real question is how fast, how unevenly, and for whom.WHY UBER IS MOVING NOW
Uber has been inching toward this moment for years, but 2026 has made the strategy more visible. The company has already unveiled Uber Autonomous Solutions, a program aimed at accelerating autonomous mobility and delivery worldwide, and Reuters reported in February that Uber planned to facilitate robotaxi trips in up to 15 cities globally by the end of 2026.
The company is also deepening partnerships instead of trying to build everything itself. S&P Global Mobility noted that Uber’s autonomous push includes a $300 million investment in Lucid for at least 20,000 Gravity SUVs with Nuro technology and a separate Rivian deal that could reach $1.25 billion by 2031, with an order that may scale to 40,000 vehicles if autonomy targets are met.Dit verhaal komt uit de April 18, 2026-editie van Techlife News.
