The U.S. federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credit, long a cornerstone of clean-energy policy, officially expired this month after years of incentivizing car buyers to adopt battery-powered vehicles.

EV TAX CREDIT EXPIRES - TESLA EMERGES STRONGER THAN RIVALS

The phaseout marks a major turning point for the industry. But while the end of the credit has sparked concerns for automakers reliant on subsidies, one company appears to be weathering the change better than most: Tesla.

A POLICY ERA ENDS

The EV tax credit, worth up to $7,500 for qualifying vehicles, was introduced to encourage adoption at a time when EVs were considered niche, expensive, and impractical for mainstream drivers. The program helped Tesla and other early players like Nissan and General Motors build momentum, lowering entry costs for consumers and accelerating infrastructure growth.

But as EV adoption surged, political consensus around the subsidy fractured. Some lawmakers argued that the incentive unfairly favored wealthier buyers, while others insisted the EV industry had matured enough to stand on its own. With Congress unable to extend the program, the tax credit officially lapsed at the start of October.

Tesla is in a unique position as the credits disappear. Unlike many rivals, the company already went through the phaseout once before, after hitting its 200,000-vehicle cap years ago under earlier rules. That forced Tesla to compete without federal assistance while other automakers still benefited from subsidies.
