INDIAN ENTERPRISES SHOW A CYBER RESILIENCE GAP: STRONG ON DEFENCE, WEAK ON RECOVERY

Cohesity Global Research reveals that nearly half of Indian organisations' cyber resilience strategies need improvement, as data recovery, ransomware response, and GenAl risk management emerge as top challenges.
-
In a world where data has become the most valuable enterprise asset, cyber resilience has evolved from a defensive posture to a core business capability. Yet, a new global study by Cohesity, a leader in AI-powered data security and resilience, paints a sobering picture of Indian organisations' preparedness.
According to “Risk-Ready or Risk-Exposed: The Cyber Resilience Divide”, nearly half of Indian organisations have cyber resilience strategies that “require improvement,” despite widespread investments in cybersecurity technologies and frameworks. The findings reveal a striking disconnect between perception and performance — where companies believe they are resilient, but in reality, remain vulnerable to prolonged disruption, ransom demands, and costly data loss.
Cyber Threats Mount as Confidence Outpaces Capability
Cohesity’s study surveyed 3,200 IT and security decision-makers across eleven countries, including 300 from India, to assess their cyber resilience maturity. The findings confirm that cyber threats are escalating in both volume and complexity, driven by AI-powered attacks, evolving ransomware tactics, and the increasing exploitation of supply chain vulnerabilities.
In India, 61% of respondents reported suffering a cyberattack with material impact over the past year — a figure that underscores the inevitability of breaches even for well-protected enterprises. However, the real challenge lies in what happens after the breach.
An overwhelming 99% of Indian organisations admitted that restoring data from backups takes more than 24 hours, while 12% said full recovery requires at least a week. This lag in recovery translates directly to business downtime, revenue loss, and reputational damage — revealing that while defences may be in place, the ability to recover quickly and effectively remains a critical weak link.
