What is the major development taking place in the transformer industry?

A key development is the redesign of transformers to support bidirectional power flows. Historically, grid infrastructure was optimised for one-way transmission, but renewable plants introduce variability and reverse feed from multiple decentralised sources. To address this, modern transformers are engineered with thermally upgraded insulation, advanced magnetic core materials, anti-harmonic winding configurations, and faster tap-changer response systems. These features allow it to maintain voltage stability and minimise energy losses under intermittent renewable operation.
