HVDC backbone of efficient transmission

For carrying bulk power across thousands of kilometres or through submarine cables, there is no alternative to HVDC.

As the world moves toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and India by 2070, the focus has shifted from merely generating renewable power to efficiently transmitting it across vast distances. With the rapid expansion of offshore wind farms, solar parks, and hybrid renewable projects, the challenge lies in moving this clean power to consumption centres without heavy losses or instability. In this context, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission has become the most crucial enabler of the global clean energy transition.

Efficient transmission over longer distances

For decades, High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) systems formed the foundation of electricity transmission.

However, beyond a distance of around 400 to 500 kilometres, AC transmission faces increasing technical and economic limitations. The long lines experience high reactive power losses, voltage instability, and reduced efficiency, making it unsuitable for bulk or undersea power transmission. HVDC, on the other hand, provides a far more efficient and controllable way to move large amounts of electricity over long distances.
