By FY26, the wires and cables industry is expected to tap around 10,000 km of interstate transmission installation, apart from rail and metro capex.

Capacity surge powers demand for advanced wires and cables

The surge in installed generation capacity to 476 GW and the broader power-system expansion are having a strong positive effect on demand for high-tech wires and cables across both urban and rural networks in India.

Key demand factors

The main channels through which higher capacity is translating into wires and cables demand:

Generation to transmission & distribution (T&D) expansion: With rising generation capacity, more transmission and distribution infrastructure is required, including extra-high-voltage (EHV) lines and long-haul cables for grid interconnections. According to industry reports, for FY26, the wires and cables industry is expected to tap around 10,000 km of interstate transmission installation, apart from rail and metro capex. This significant demand is facilitated by 45-55 GW of additional generation capacity.

Urban infrastructure and real estate growth: Urbanisation and housing-for-all schemes are boosting demand for low-voltage (LV) wiring, building wiring, and specialised cables (fire-safe, high-efficiency) in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Smart grids, metro rail, data centres, and EV charging infrastructure also require higher-spec cables.
