WINDOWS 10 END-OF-SUPPORT PUTS SPAIN AT RISK, WITH MORE THAN HALF OF COMPUTERS STILL RUNNING THE OS

Spain faces a looming digital security crisis as Microsoft prepares to end support for Windows 10 in October 2025.

WINDOWS 10 END-OF-SUPPORT PUTS SPAIN AT RISK, WITH MORE THAN HALF OF COMPUTERS STILL RUNNING THE OS

According to recent market data, more than 54% of computers in the country are still running the operating system, leaving them exposed to vulnerabilities once updates cease. Unless businesses, institutions, and households accelerate migration, millions of machines could become targets for cyberattacks.

A HEAVY RELIANCE ON WINDOWS 10

Despite the release of Windows 11 in 2021, adoption in Spain has lagged. Local IT analysts say many enterprises, government offices, and schools remain dependent on Windows 10 due to hardware compatibility, software legacy requirements, or simply the high costs of upgrading.

“Spain has one of the highest rates of Windows 10 reliance in Europe,” said an IT security consultant in Madrid. “That dependency becomes a liability the moment Microsoft stops releasing patches.”

Data from StatCounter shows that while Windows 11 has grown to about 35% market share in Spain, it remains far behind Windows 10. By contrast, countries like Germany and the U.K. have been quicker to transition, narrowing their exposure before the end-of-life deadline.
