The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) made history this week by becoming the first U.S. utility to submit a construction permit application for a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY PIONEERS U.S. SMALL NUCLEAR REACTOR WITH CLINCH RIVER PROJECT

The proposed BWRX-300 reactor, planned for the Clinch River Nuclear Site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee, marks a bold step toward advancing clean energy in the $1.7 trillion U.S. electricity market.

For energy providers, environmental advocates, and policymakers, TVA's move signals a potential revival of nuclear power, addressing rising electricity demands while reducing carbon emissions.

The application, a culmination of years of planning, positions TVA at the forefront of next-generation nuclear technology, leveraging the BWRX-300's compact design to deliver 300 megawatts of carbon-free power-enough for 150,000 homes.

TVA's submission to the NRC seeks approval to construct a BWRX-300 SMR at the 1,200-acre Clinch River site, a location designated for nuclear development since the 1970s. The application, filed recently, is the first of its kind in the U.S., following a 2022 TVA board decision to explore advanced nuclear technologies.

If approved, construction could begin by 2027, with the reactor operational by 2032, delivering 300 megawatts to TVA's grid, which serves 10 million customers across seven states.

The process involved extensive collaboration with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, the BWRX300's developer, and partners like Ontario Power Generation and ORLEN Synthos, backed by a $400 million investment to advance global SMR deployment.

TVA's application reflects years of feasibility studies and a $200 million federal grant application to fund licensing and design.
