A NEW PLAYER IN INDIA'S INTERNET MARKET
-

India has granted a license to Elon Musk's Starlink, allowing the satellite internet provider to begin commercial operations in the country. The approval, issued by the Department of Telecommunications, marks a significant step for Starlink, which has sought entry into the world's most populous nation for years.
The company now joins Eutelsat's OneWeb and Reliance Jio as one of three authorized satellite internet providers in India, setting the stage for a competitive broadband market.
Starlink operates a constellation of over 7,000 low Earth orbit satellites, delivering high-speed, low-latency internet to remote and underserved areas. Unlike traditional cable or fiber networks, its satellite system requires minimal ground infrastructure, making it ideal for connecting rural and mountainous regions where terrestrial networks struggle. In India, where nearly 40% of the 1.4 billion population lacks internet access, Starlink's service could bridge a critical digital divide.

Starlink must comply with strict security rules, including enabling lawful interception, localizing data processing, and indigenizing 20% of its ground infrastructure within five years.
These conditions reflect India's focus on national security and self-reliance, balancing innovation with oversight. The company still needs a separate approval from India's space regulator and must secure spectrum to start services, a process requiring rigorous testing.
