DATA CENTERS IN ORBIT AND THE LIMITS OF SPACE-BASED COMPUTING
AppleMagazine
|December 19, 2025
The idea of placing data centers in space has moved from science fiction into serious discussion among aerospace companies, cloud providers, and artificial intelligence researchers.
-
Proposals to deploy orbital computing infrastructure have gained visibility alongside rapid growth in Al workloads, rising energy costs on Earth, and mounting pressure on terrestrial data center capacity. With some proponents pointing to 2027 as a possible milestone year, the concept raises questions about technical feasibility, economic rationale, and whether space-based computing can move beyond experimental demonstrations.
The renewed interest reflects broader constraints facing the data center industry. AI training and inference demand increasingly dense compute clusters, which in turn require massive amounts of power, cooling, and land. In some regions, grid limitations and environmental permitting have slowed or halted new construction. Against that backdrop, space-based data centers are being discussed as a way to bypass terrestrial bottlenecks rather than as a replacement for existing infrastructure.
Current proposals vary widely in scope. Some envision small, specialized compute platforms in low Earth orbit designed for niche workloads, while others describe large-scale facilities capable of supporting advanced AI models. None of these systems exist in operational form today, and timelines remain conceptual rather than committed. The reference to 2027 reflects optimistic projections rather than confirmed launch schedules. WHY SPACE HAS ENTERED THE DATA CENTER DISCUSSION
Several technical arguments are driving interest in orbital data centers. One is power availability. In space, solar energy is continuous and unobstructed by weather or day-night cycles, which theoretically allows for constant power generation.
