AMERICAN EXPRESS BRINGS MEMBERSHIP REWARDS REDEMPTION TO APPLE PAY

American Express has expanded its partnership with Apple by allowing eligible cardholders to redeem Membership Rewards points directly when paying with Apple Pay on the web and in supported iPhone apps.

The new feature adds another layer of flexibility to Apple Pay by letting customers choose between paying with their card, redeeming reward points, or combining both during checkout. Instead of visiting a separate rewards portal or converting points before making a purchase, eligible users can apply their Membership Rewards balance as part of the payment process.

The update reflects a broader trend among financial institutions to integrate loyalty programs more deeply into digital wallets, making rewards easier to use in everyday transactions.

APPLE PAY CONTINUES TO EXPAND BEYOND PAYMENTS

Apple Pay has evolved far beyond its original role as a contactless payment system. Over the past decade, Apple has steadily added features that make the wallet a hub for digital commerce, including transit passes, event tickets, hotel keys, loyalty cards, digital IDs, and installment payment options in supported markets.

Adding Membership Rewards redemption directly to Apple Pay builds on that strategy.

Instead of treating rewards as a separate experience, the integration allows customers to access them at the exact moment they decide how to pay. That reduces friction and encourages more frequent use of both Apple Pay and American Express cards.
