Strachan confident Ampthill will be firing again soon

FRASER Strachan is determined to put Ampthill’s leaky defensive showings behind them and gain some much needed confidence in the run up to Christmas.

The 26-year-old former Northampton and Doncaster centre says he’s learnt a lot about his group in recent weeks when the chips have been down after their 92-0 demolition at Ealing, who Ampthill beat last season, and the 73-0 thrashing at home to Bath.

Ampthill finished seventh last season and currently lie eighth after picking up two wins from five in the Championship. Their Premiership Cup campaign has only compounded the losses with back-to-back defeats ahead of their meeting with in-form Bristol today.

Strachan says recent results have been some of the lowest points of his rugby career.

“We’ve had some tough conversations as a group and as a leadership team as well,” he told The Rugby Paper. “We’ve had to look at ourselves because we haven’t been good enough the last few weeks and it’s all our own doing. It’s been difficult, the coaching staff have held their hands up to say the messages and preparation weren’t right. When you’re on the end of some of those scorelines, you’re looking for who wants to put their hand up and right the wrongs.
