Ealing go close but Chiefs sneak home

EXETER Chiefs have gambled their entire season on Premiership Rugby Cup success but their high-stakes bet almost backfired in a dramatic semi-final clash with Ealing Trailfinders.

The Chiefs have made no secret of the fact that they are prioritising silverware of some sort in this transitional year for the Devonians. They did, however, almost lose it all as their Championship visitors pushed them to the brink.

In a contest that certainly tested their nerves, the Chiefs eventually came good in the final quarter, scraping home to keep their hopes of a third success in the competition alive and kicking.

Ealing, however, can take great pride from an impressive showing in this first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Ben Ward's team went toe-totoe with their illustrious hosts throughout - and will no doubt be kicking themselves as they spurned a golden oppor tunity when they led by 10 points in the second period.

On such small margins are games won and lost. Indeed, moving forward that will be the key learning for the Londoners who, in days gone by, would be testing themselves at this level every week if there was a more even playing field when it comes to promotion criteria into the top flight.
