The Latics forward headed home Mike Fondop’s cross five minutes from time to secure a hard-fought victory.

And Wealdstone’s misery was compounded in stoppage-time when substitute Christian Scott was shown a straight red card by referee Ben Wyatt for denying Fondop a clear goalscoring opportunity.

“It’s a really difficult afternoon to play,” Latics boss Micky Mellon said.

“The important thing is, on your difficult days, when it isn’t the game of your dreams, you go and get that victory. That’s the sign of a team definitely moving in the right direction. I want to thank the fans as they didn’t get frustrated, they got it, that it was a difficult afternoon and it was going to be difficult.”
