PLAYERS' DISTANCE IRONS
Golf Monthly
|Summer 2025
The players' distance iron category is a very interesting equipment space where all manner of different player types seem to converge.
Whether you are someone who has traditionally played compact forged irons but now requires a gentle power boost without compromising on looks, or you are someone who has been using more gameimprovement-style irons but your ball-striking is on an upward trajectory, there are many models to consider in this genre. I have rigorously tested a multitude of different iron models over the past few months and have split my favourites into categories to help you narrow down your options.
LooksThe visual appeal of an iron is a critical component that can often be the deciding factor for many when deliberating over a purchase. Even the very best-performing clubs can struggle to make it into a golfer's bag if the look just isn't up to scratch. However, looks are so subjective that I wouldn't want to presume to tell you what you should and shouldn't like. Instead, I wanted to highlight a few models that demonstrate some very specific aesthetic characteristics that might appeal to your eye.
There are many golfers out there who prioritise the most confidence-inspiring, user-friendly look possible at address, and if that sounds like you, then I would start by trying the PXG 0311P Gen 7 iron. Before you even pull this model out of the bag, you will notice an encouragingly sizeable sole width. When you subsequently put it behind the ball, you look down on a healthy blade length, giving you confidence that there is some margin for error on heel or toe strikes.
