Megan Potter's KallistiOS first emerged around 2001 and is widely used by Dreamcast developers, supporting C and C++. "It's an entire homebrew SDK - complete with toolchains, examples, documentation, tools, and more," Falco Girgis tells us. "It is incredibly approachable and easy to work with, with its standard library support and functioning as a complete mini operating system and kernel."

During development, assets need to be transferred. “Our virtual filesystem may be our single best feature,” Falco continues. “Most of us stream our assets from our PCs during development before eventually swapping to CD-ROM access before release.” Currently, the teams do not make any downloads available with binary assets from the original games; for example, Grand Theft Auto III comes with instructions to turn a Steam download into a bootable Dreamcast image.
