Nothing is quite so easy to manipulate as an insecure male, a very bad man once said, and The Spy knows a bit about that. Such psychological shenanigans have long been a part of videogame marketing, selling the dream that players (and not just male ones) are bigger, more popular, perhaps more attractive than they are in real life.

The quotation up there comes not from a real-life serial killer or politician – though it easily could – but one that’s entirely made up: Emmerich Voss, the antagonist of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This is a game as whip-smart with its politics as it is with its puzzles, and it sells a dream to its target audience: that of being an archaeologist.
