Naib Subedar Chunni Lal (6 March 1968 - 24 June 2007) served with the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (8 JAK LI).

The inspiring Chunni Lal

He hailed from Bhaderwah in the Doda district of Jammu. Lal was awarded the Vir Chakra and the Sena Medal, but tragically lost his life on June 24, 2007, during a militant flush-out operation in the Kupwara sector of Kashmir. The militants involved, all of whom were also killed, were attempting to breach the Line of Control (LOC) to infiltrate Indian territory.

The successful execution of this operation, which ultimately led to his death, posthumously earned him the Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime military honour for acts of bravery, courageous conduct, or self-sacrifice outside of combat. He remains the most decorated soldier in the history of the Indian Army, having received the Sena Medal, Vir Chakra, and Ashok Chakra.
