INDIA-SWEDEN DEFENCE UPDATE

August 2025

A high-level Indian defence delegation's visit to Sweden in June 2025 marked a turning point—from strategic discussions to industrial collaboration, with an emphasis on innovation, manufacturing, and export partnerships.

INDIA-SWEDEN DEFENCE UPDATE

A recent high-level visit by an Indian defence delegation to Sweden marks a notable shift in how the two countries approach their longstanding strategic ties.

What was once a framework for cooperation has now begun to take shape as an industrial alliance, grounded in technology exchange, shared innovation, and co-production.

Held over two days in Stockholm and timed with the 10th India-Sweden Joint Working Group (JWG) on Defence Cooperation, the visit brought together officials from India's Ministry of Defence, state-owned defence enterprises, private manufacturers, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Swedish defence companies, senior officials, and industry associations welcomed the delegation, with discussions focused not just on exploring opportunities but on delivering outcomes.

The visit comes at a time when both countries are realigning their defence priorities. For India, the goal is clear: greater self-reliance under the 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' banners. For Sweden, the attraction lies in India’s expanding manufacturing base, growing defence needs, and a shared outlook on rules-based global security. The challenge has always been translating shared strengths into actual partnerships. This time, both sides appear ready to move forward.

Shared Vision, Structured Progress

India and Sweden have been talking defence for over a decade. Their cooperation began formally in 2009 with the signing of a Framework Agreement. Momentum picked up in 2018 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sweden and the two countries agreed on a Joint Action Plan, which recognised defence and security as key pillars of bilateral engagement. The signing of the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) in 2019 further allowed for the exchange of classified technologies, removing a critical barrier to co-development.
