The night sky has always been a source of fascination for humans, with its twinkling stars, majestic planets, and occasional spectacular events like planetary conjunctions. A conjunction occurs when two or more celestial bodies, such as planets, moons, or stars, appear to align in the sky, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle. For photographers, capturing these rare events can be a thrilling experience, offering a unique opportunity to freeze the moment and preserve the beauty of the universe. In this article, we'll explore the world of photographing conjunctions, providing tips and techniques for capturing these celestial alignments.

PHOTOGRAPHING CONJUNCTIONS: WHEN PLANETS ALIGN IN THE SKY

What are Conjunctions?

A conjunction occurs when two or more celestial bodies appear to be close to each other in the sky, often forming a striking visual pattern. This apparent alignment is an optical illusion caused by the perspective from Earth. The most common type of conjunction involves planets, which can appear aligned due to their orbits around the Sun. The frequency and timing of conjunctions depend on the orbital periods of the planets involved, with some events occurring more frequently than others. For example, the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, known as a “Great Conjunction”, occurs approximately every 20 years, while the alignment of Venus and Mars happens more frequently, about every 2-3 years.

These celestial alignments are not limited to planets. The Moon, stars, and even man-made satellites can play a role in creating stunning conjunctions that captivate the imagination of both casual stargazers and avid astrophotographers.

Types of Conjunctions

There are several types of conjunctions that can be photographed, each with its unique characteristics and challenges:

1. Planetary Conjunctions

Planetary conjunctions involve two or more planets appearing close to each other in the sky. Examples include the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, the Venus-Mars conjunction, and the Mercury-Venus conjunction. These events often showcase bright planets in vibrant colours, creating visually striking images.

image2. Lunar Conjunctions

Lunar conjunctions occur when the Moon appears to align with a planet or a star. These can be particularly striking, as the Moon’s bright light creates a beautiful contrast against the dark sky. The presence of lunar craters adds texture and depth to the image.

How Close Should You Get to a Subject? Ethics in Macro

Macro photography is all about getting close — closer than the eye can see. It invites us into intimate worlds: The spiralled symmetry of a snail's shell, the fine hairs on a bee's leg, the dew resting on a spider's web. But as we close in, a question looms that goes beyond technique or gear: How close should we get?

OnePlus Nord 5 Camera Review - New Midrange King?

Last year, when we reviewed the OnePlus Nord 4, it left us wanting more. This year, the Nord 5 arrives with bold promises - it's the first Nord to feature a Snapdragon 8-series chipset and the first mainstream OnePlus device with a 144Hz OLED display. But what we're really here for is the camera - especially since it borrows tech from the flagship OnePlus 13. While pricing hasn't been officially confirmed (we received both the Nord 5 and CE5 under embargo), we expect it to stay close to last year's launch price - between ₹30,000-₹35,000. According to OnePlus, this is their most complete Nord yet. So, do the cameras live up to that claim? Let's find out!

DECAY DIARIES: DISCOVERING THE BEAUTY OF ROT, RUST, AND RUIN THROUGH MACRO

Decay is usually seen as a sign of failure, of neglect, corrosion, and abandonment. It marks the places we leave behind and the things we no longer touch. But for those who carry a macro lens, decay is not the end of something, but the beginning of a fascinating visual story. Up close, rot becomes a rich texture, rust becomes a complex pattern, and ruin becomes poetry. Welcome to the world of Decay Diaries, where beauty isn’t found in perfection, but in what is slowly falling apart.

WHERE DOES MACRO END AND MICRO BEGIN?

Macro photography opens the door to a world we rarely notice-a place where the texture of a leaf becomes a jungle, the surface of a coin a lunar landscape. But how close is too close? At what point does macro stop being macro and enter the realm of micro photography? The line between the two isn't just a matter of semantics. It's about tools, technique, and intent. In this article, we'll draw that line.
