September 2023

One of the popular lens categories in the Mirrorless Lenses is the 70-200mm. These lenses are popular amongst a number of photographers since it allows them to capture images from a distance.

MIRRORLESS FULL-FRAME TELEPHOTO ZOOM LENS SHOOTOUT

These lenses are the choices for weddings, fashion, travel and wildlife as well. However, photographers now have to decide if they want a lens that's affordable or one that takes really good pictures. In a test, we asked different companies to send their best lenses that can zoom from 70mm to 200mm and have an aperture of f/2.8 or f/4. We'll see how well these lenses work in different situations and which one is the best.

Benchmarking Test:

These tests are unique because we use widely accepted industry benchmarks to evaluate how well the lenses perform, rather than just relying on our subjective opinions about how they appear or feel. This year, we take the lenses using the following tests to measure their performance:

Build, Handling & Performance:

Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD Lens

The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 lens has a familiar and well-made design, similar to other Tamron telephoto lenses. It feels comfortable to use, especially if you're accustomed to Tamron lenses. It's a solidly built and compact lens, especially when compared to similar lenses made by other companies. We used it on a Sony A7 R IV camera, and it felt better and lighter than the Nikon Z70-200mm f/2.8 lens. The lens is priced at ₹99,900.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Lens

The Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is quite large and heavy compared to its competitor. It feels strong and secure when held and offers good control, but using it for a long time might be a bit tough. The lens is well-made and is priced at ₹2,15,900.

EACH DIVE A BATTLE, EACH ASCENT A QUIET VICTORY:

When Mark Smith speaks about birds, he doesn’t talk like a photographer chasing the perfect frame. He speaks like a witness—someone who has spent years observing, listening and quietly learning from the natural world. Winning the HIPA Award this year may have brought his work global recognition, but for Smith, the moment still feels unreal. Bhavya Desai spoke to him about his love for birds and more. Excerpts:

BEST CAMERAS OF 2025

Competition doesn't sleep, and 2025 was no exception for the quote. The imaging industry went through a makeover of sorts, as we saw a shift of priority from companies, which led to them making cameras which were more hybrid in nature. This year we saw the Nikon-RED merger further fruitioning into a compact, competitive cinema camera and Canon releasing one in a similar form factor but with different capabilities and priority. In this round up, we list the cameras that brought something new to the table. Just like last year, we aren't including lenses, drones or action cameras or cinema cameras even though they've got so much in common with their mirrorless cousins.

Canon EOS R6 Mark III Review

It's time to dig out the Canon-Nikon rivalry from the DSLR era! Last year when we reviewed Nikon's Z6 III, we concluded that it's a solid buy with no real competition in the space. Well, that has certainly changed with the launch of the new Canon EOS R6 III. Priced at *₹2.44L puts it above its entry-level sibling - the R8 and below the flagship R5, R3 & R1 bodies. It also squarely sits in the same price bracket as the Nikon Z6 III which is interesting for the competition!

USA Bans DJI Drones

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that foreign-made drones and key components—including those from DJI —will be added to its “Covered List”, effectively banning future imports into the United States.
