Stocks climb as oil retreats, Palace signals peso support

SHARE prices rebounded on Tuesday as oil prices eased overnight, while Malacañang signaled that the government is prepared to intervene to stabilize the peso if the currency weakens further amid the Middle East conflict.

The PSEi rose 2.01 percent, or 120.44 points, to 6,126.66. The broader All Shares climbed 1.82 percent, or 60.86 points, to 3,407.61.

Gainers outnumbered losers 147 to 58, with 64 stocks unchanged. Trade value reached P7.49 billion across 95,042 trades covering 1.4 billion shares.

Foreign investors remained net sellers of P498.05 million worth of shares, with buying at P3.52 billion and selling at P4.01 billion.

Peso pressure

Malacañang said the government, led by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), is ready to implement measures to stabilize the peso if its recent slide continues.
