The importance of composting

Regular annual dressings of decayed animal and vegetable matter, spread on the surface as mulch to counter evaporation and dug into the soil to maintain the humus level, are becoming increasingly important.

Recycling of garden and kitchen waste via composting results in an odourless product, pleasant to handle, that can either be added to the soil as a conditioner or turned into a potting or seed sowing compost with the addition of plant food.

Alternatively, add sand or perlite for a rooting medium.

Ideally, site a compound or compost bin to catch the sun at some point of the day.
