Raising a glass to successful new recycling scheme

Yorkshire Day this year was a double cause for celebration in Leeds - it coincided with the end of the first successful year of household glass collections.

The new service, delivered by Leeds City Council, began on August 1, 2024 and has seen nearly 12,000 tonnes of glass recycled through people's green bins.

That equates to over two million wine bottles per month and has helped save 464 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2e), the equivalent of taking more than 170 cars off the road.

It has also helped increase glass recycling levels in Leeds from 48 per cent to 75 per cent in the first 12 months.
